The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law December 10, 2015 and replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Maryland is in the process of developing a Consolidated State Plan for the implementation of this law which will be implemented in the 2017-2018 school year. Teacher Qualifications

AssessmentsAssessments

Maryland students participate in the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) and are tested in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics (grades 3-8 and high school), Science (grades 5,8 and high school), and Government (high school). MCAP also includes the English language proficiency assessment (students learning English grades K-12) and the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA).

In addition to the state MCAP assessments, students take other assessments such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and college readiness test including Advanced Placement (AP) and SAT.
